Data from Google has revealed that the search URL “how to pronounce Uighur?” has topped the charts for postcodes in NW3.
Other popular searches included “is it Uighur or Uyghur?”, “am I anti-semitic if I secretly fancy Jeremy Corbyn?”, and “can I still shop at Calvin Klein without perpetrating a genocide?”.
News of the ethnic cleansing of the Uighur people was first broadcast internationally in 2017, and has gained traction in recent months thanks to coverage from influencers on Tiktok. Commenting on the trend , Dominic Raab said “I am glad that this much-ignored issue is finally getting traction. The credible accounts of forced abortions, organ harvesting, and slave labour are greatly concerning, and I am glad the media is finally taking interest in the horrific situation in Xinjiang. However, I felt the Halloween costumes to be very insensitive”
